Serpents Lair Aran Islands Galway

Rumours of the legendary Serpent’s Lair (Poll na Peist) on the Aran Islands circulate world wide throughout the cliff diving community. Similar to numerous other locations on the islands, the Serpents Lair is what fishermen call a “blowhole,” or a shoreline window to subterranean caverns, which spurt out water each day as high tide approaches. What differentiates the Serpent’s Lair from other blowholes, though, is that it’s a near-perfect rectangle, thus its inexplicable nature.

The Serpent’s Lair is one of those places you only hear stories about, said Orlando Duque, during a photoshoot ahead of the first ever Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series competition in 2009. “Finding this place and being able to dive there was one of the highlights of my career. Hopefully in the future we can bring a cliff diving competition to Ireland.” Orlando’s hopes will be answered during the first weekend of August, when the world’s best cliff divers come to the biggest of the three Aran Islands for the season’s halfway stage. A ferry ride from Galway on Ireland’s west coast, Inis Mor is home to the Serpent’s Lair – Poll na Peist in Gaelic – a natural formation that fishermen call a ‘blowhole’. What makes the Serpent’s Lair special is that it’s a near-perfect rectangle, its inexplicable shape ensconced in Gaelic legend.

Cliff diving is considered to be the acrobatic perfection of diving into water from heights ranging between 23 to 28 meters for men and 18 to 23 meters for women. The athletes have approximately three seconds to coordinate their forms and movements before they hit the surface of the water at around 100km/h. A pancake landing from such heights can be compared with a hard landing from 13m on concrete.

Looks like there aint tickets for sale for this event, they have to be won via Red Bull, there aint any accommodation available either on the Inis Mor as its booked solid looking online, I suppose you could still take a ferry out there from Galway on a day trip and hope you get a glimpe of the diving.

There are alot of people travelling to Inis Mor following the promotional campaign. Red Bull need to establish some kind of system to accommodate spectators. If the site is restrictive to numbers, they could run site entry on rotation where people have a chance of viewing the competition for at least 30 minutes. Some sort of solution is needed.

I was the former National, Ulster and inter-provisional Champion for Ireland for 10 consecutive years (which has never been done before or since in Irish diving history). I would so love to try and get tickets for this event as diving was and is still a big part of my life as i now coach children high board and spring board diving. I have applied on line through the redbull challange for tickets but wondering if anyone knows another way to purchase tickets?

why advertise it if you cant get tickets????????

  10.
    Jonathan

Ridiculous that you have to try win the tickets, nothing about a public sale of tickets, to the fan who wears his GoPro on his Red Bull helmet at every giving chance. Saddened. Organiser have let a lot of people down.
Very badly oraganised in means of tickets.
    Why advertise it then???
